A dizzying variety of beaches, swamplands, savannas, bays, inlets, rivers, and lakes combine to make Florida one of the most ecologically diverse states in the country. Unfortunately, these types of geographic features can present a challenge to getting reliable cell phone service, as they can lead to dropouts and inconsistent data speeds.
However, Florida is also one of the flattest states in the country, so in most cases your cell phone signal can travel to you unimpeded despite these obstacles. Verizon offers the most 4G LTE coverage in Florida (covering 69% of the state), while AT&T offers the most 5G coverage (52%).
Read on to learn more about which carriers offer the best cell phone coverage in the places you work, live and play in Florida.
Verizon offers far and away the most 4G LTE coverage in the state of Florida. However, Verizon’s 5G network, while growing fast, currently trails both AT&T and T-Mobile in terms of total area covered.
By zooming in to the map below, Verizon’s 4G dominance in Florida becomes readily apparent. Other than a dead zone over Lake Okeechobee, the entire state is blanketed by Verizon 4G coverage.
While Verizon’s 4G LTE network reigns supreme in Florida, its 5G network is a different story. Verizon 5G spreads to just 24% of state, though a percentage of this coverage is comprised of the carrier’s super-fast 5G Ultra-Wideband.
Still, that 24% 5G coverage trails both T-Mobile (49%) and AT&T (52%), both of which have expanded their 5G footprints aggressively in Florida. That said, Verizon is also working to build out its fast and reliable 5G network in the state. It's currently present in all of Florida’s major cities, including Miami, Orlando, Tampa, Jacksonville, West Palm Beach, and Fort Lauderdale.
AT&T’s cellular networks are well established in Florida, and indeed the carrier offers the second-most 4G LTE coverage (64%) in the state, and the most 5G coverage (52%).
AT&T offers excellent 4G LTE coverage throughout Florida, second only to Verizon in terms of the amount of area covered. Whether you live near the coast or more within the state’s interior, you can count on generally excellent coverage from AT&T.
While T-Mobile is generally regarded as the nation’s king of 5G, AT&T actually offers more 5G coverage throughout the state of Florida. Indeed, AT&T’s basic 5G network covers an impressive 52% of the state, a full 3% more area covered than T-Mobile.
Want proof? Select “5G Basic” from the map below, and scroll around Florida. The blank spots are far and few between. The best part? A good portion of this 5G coverage includes AT&T’s enhanced 5G+ spectrum, which offers lightning-fast speeds and low latency.
T-Mobile’s 4G network covers 53% of the state of Florida, while its 5G network spans across 49% of the state’s 65,758 square miles.
As mentioned, T-Mobile’s 4G network covers 53% of Florida, trailing the likes of AT&T (64% coverage) and Verizon (69% coverage). Still, most of the state’s populated areas enjoy excellent 4G coverage from T-Mobile, including all of Florida’s cities and mid-sized towns.
T-Mobile has made a lot of noise about its nationwide 5G network, and in many states the carrier offers the most 5G coverage out of the big three carriers. In Florida, T-Mobile offers the second-most 5G coverage (49%) trailing AT&T (52%) and besting Verizon (24%).
A significant portion of T-Mobile’s 5G network in Florida is made up of its enhanced 5G Ultra Capacity spectrum, which offers incredibly fast speeds.
When it comes to cell phone plans in Florida, your choices aren’t limited to Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile—there’s a number of smaller carriers that also offer a range of plans to Florida residents. All of these carriers lease from the aforementioned major carrier networks to provide coverage to their customers.
If you’re signed up with Spectrum Mobile, for example, you’ll have access to Verizon coverage, since the carrier runs on that network. Here some popular MVNOs, and the networks they operate on:
When it comes to cell phone coverage, you don’t just need a cellular signal—you need that signal to provide adequate speed. That’s why it’s important to distinguish between 4G and 5G coverage in your area. In general, 5G provides faster speeds and greater reliability than 4G. However, that’s not always the case, as there may be instances when the speeds of these respective coverage types are actually quite similar.
There’s more to getting the best coverage than just signing up with the carrier that offers reliable service in the places you spend time. These include:
