Do you like the idea of having a personal assistant in your pocket? Galaxy AI offers just that — a suite of intelligent features designed to make your experience with Samsung Galaxy phones and devices more efficient than ever.

With Galaxy AI, you can put your Galaxy devices to work for you on a range of tasks, from drafting messages to enhancing photos to translating conversations in real-time. The best part? Galaxy AI is free on all compatible Samsung devices until at least the end of 2025.

In this article, we'll explore Galaxy AI and how it can improve the functionality of your Samsung Galaxy devices.

What Is Galaxy AI?

Thanks to the popularity of Meta AI and OpenAI's ChatGPT, you may have heard a lot of talk about AI recently.

Galaxy AI is Samsung's artificial intelligence system, and like these other examples, it can help you get more done with less effort by writing customized messages, translating foreign languages, responding to text prompts with helpful answers, and more.

Its features are both on-device and cloud-based, so some of its more advanced tasks may require an internet connection, while others will be available on your device anytime.

Google technology handles much of the power behind Galaxy AI, like the company's Imagen 2 engine, which drives Galaxy AI's photo editing features.

Gemini Pro, Google's multimodal model, can understand and respond to information in different formats, like text, images, code, or speech. That means Galaxy AI can comprehend written commands, use speech prompts to generate a response, and "see" photos. For instance, you could upload an image of a plate of food and ask Galaxy AI to create a recipe for it.

Galaxy S24 smartphones come with Google's Gemini Nano, a powerful model for on-device tasks that will keep personal data more secure.

What Phones and Devices Use Samsung Galaxy AI?

Currently, Galaxy AI is available on many of Samsung's recent devices, such as the Galaxy S24, S24+, and S24 Ultra. The platform is also available on the Galaxy S23, S22, and S21 series. The new Galaxy Z Fold6 and Flip6 and previous-generation Samsung foldable phones can also use Galaxy AI if they are no older than the Fold3 and Flip3.

Laptop and tablet users can use it on the Galaxy Book4 Edge laptops and Galaxy Tab S8, S9, S9+, and S9 Ultra tablets. However, this doesn't include the Galaxy Tab S9 FE, any “A” series phones or tablets, or other unsupported models.

If you have an older Samsung phone that isn’t compatible with Galaxy AI, that’s where Navi can help. Our free and unbiased Phone Deal Finder below can show you the best Samsung phone deals you qualify for based on your current trade-in and other criteria.

What Are Samsung’s Galaxy AI Features?

Galaxy AI has a lot packed inside. We’ll dive into some of its key features here, starting with its powerful video and photo capabilities.

Galaxy AI’s Video and Photo Features

What Is Instant Slow-mo?

Galaxy AI can turn videos into slow-motion masterpieces, even if you didn't initially shoot them in slow motion.

Typically, standard videos shot on smartphones are recorded between 24 and 60 frames per second. Slow motion requires shooting a frame rate of 120 fps or higher.

But Galaxy AI’s “Instant Slow-mo” feature lets you convert a video shot in standard mode into a slow-motion clip by adding extra frames to create the slow-mo effect. Now, you won't have to worry about choosing what mode you're in when shooting video.

What Is Edit Suggestion?

Galaxy AI can make your photos look even better.

If you're unsatisfied with a picture, Galaxy AI can suggest minor changes to improve your image. With "Edit Suggestion,” you can erase unwanted shadows, reflections, or glare to give your photos an extra coat of polish before uploading them on social media.

What Is Generative Edit?

Samsung's "Generative Edit" is like having a simplified version of Photoshop on your device. Want to move your friend from one side of the picture to the other? Galaxy AI can fill in the extra space where they were, making it look like the photo was always meant to be that way.

You can also reposition and resize people and objects to create a cleaner image or expand your photos by generating backgrounds that weren't there.

Samsung says its Gallery App will automatically add a watermark to any images modified using AI to inform others that the picture was edited. But you can also use Galaxy AI’s editing tools to remove the watermark.

Galaxy AI’s Productivity Features

What Is Circle to Search?

Circle to Search” on Galaxy S24 lets you start an online search for anything on your screen, whether photos, videos, or text, by circling it with your finger or a Samsung S Pen.

This feature can save you some time by allowing you to search for items without leaving the app you’re in or typing a prompt into a search engine like Google (as long as the app you’re using allows for screen capture).

What Is Sketch to Image?

Galaxy AI’s “Sketch to Image” function lets you turn simple drawings into full-blown art.

The built-in AI image generator can take a simple drawing and turn it into something more detailed or lifelike. Alternatively, you can draw a sketch on a photograph, and the AI will attempt to create a real version of the drawing to put in the image.

What Is Magic Compose and Photomoji?

Google’s “Magic Compose” feature can write messages with generative AI assistance based on your request. So, if you need help figuring out what to text your crush, Magic Compose can give you suggestions to get you started.

The “Photomoji” tool can also add some extra fun to your texts by turning objects in your pictures into custom photo buttons that you can use to message your friends in the Google Messages app.

Both of these features are currently limited to the Samsung S24 series of phones.

What Is Note Assist?

Galaxy AI can make note-taking easier than ever thanks to its automatic formatting, summarizing, and spell-checking features within the Samsung Notes app.

With “Note Assist,” you can transcribe recordings of classes or meetings and create custom covers and templates to organize the necessary information. If you speak multiple languages, you can also use Galaxy AI to translate your notes into your preferred language.

However, Galaxy AI has a few more language and translation features, which we'll explore below.

Galaxy AI’s Language and Translation Features

What Is Samsung Keyboard?

"Samsung Keyboard” is available in every app and offers AI-powered text suggestions and writing style recommendations. You can choose between Professional, Casual, and Social styles.

To access the options, tap on the Writing Assist icon (a page with two stars) with Galaxy S24, Z Fold6, Z Flip6, and Tab S9 devices.

What Is Chat Assist?

Galaxy AI's “Chat Assist” helps whenever you type messages or post on social media.

It suggests corrections and other details, like places where you can add emojis and hashtags, change punctuation, or adjust your tone and grammar.

What Is Live Translate and Transcript Assist?

Galaxy AI's “Live Translate” feature can break down language barriers by automatically translating voice phone calls, face-to-face conversations, and text messages into your preferred language. This feature will make it easier to understand and communicate with anyone, anywhere. (English and Spanish are pre-installed in the Interpreter app.)

You can also create a transcription of the conversation using the “Transcript Assist” tool on Galaxy S24 phones.

Use Your Galaxy Device with Android Auto

Android Auto

Android Auto is the interface that brings your smartphone's navigation and messaging features to your car's infotainment screen, and in early 2024, Google announced that Android Auto was getting AI updates.

These features allow Android Auto to summarize long text or group messages so you can stay updated without getting distracted while driving. It can also recommend relevant replies to texts, so if a friend texts asking for your arrival time, Android Auto will suggest sharing your ETA.

Android Auto is compatible with Samsung Galaxy devices.

How to Use Galaxy AI on Samsung Galaxy Devices

Getting started with Galaxy AI is simple, but you’ll need the One UI 6.1 software update first. If you don’t already have them, it's also recommended that you create Google and Samsung accounts.

Here's how to make sure your device is up-to-date with One UI:

Check for the One UI 6.1 Update

  • Open Settings: Navigate to your device's settings.
  • Find Software Updates: Scroll down and tap on "Software update" or "System updates" (the name might change depending on your device).
  • Download and Install: Tap "Check for system updates" or "Check for software updates" to see if One UI 6.1 is available. If it is, your device will start downloading automatically, though on some devices, you might need to tap "Download now."

View Recent Updates

  • Check Last Update: Tap on "Last update" to see what’s new and the UI version you're on.
  • Check Current Software Version: Go back to "Settings," tap "About phone," and then "Software information" to confirm your software version.

Explore Galaxy AI Features

  • After the update, the setup wizard will guide you through Galaxy AI's features.
  • You can also explore these features manually by going to Settings, tapping "Advanced features," and then "Advanced intelligence."

How to Turn Off Galaxy AI

Galaxy AI's features are impressive, but they may not be for everyone, especially when it involves sending personal or sensitive data to the cloud.

If you prefer to keep things private, here's how you can turn off Galaxy AI features on your device:

  • Open Settings: Head to the Settings app on your Galaxy device.
  • Go to Advanced Features: Scroll down and tap "Advanced Features."
  • Select Advanced Intelligence: Pick “Advanced Intelligence,” and you'll find a list of Galaxy AI features.
  • Toggle Off Each Item: Go through each feature and turn off the ones you don't want to use.

There's also an option for those who want to continue using some AI features but prefer their data to stay on their devices.

How to Keep Data Local

In the Advanced Intelligence settings, you can toggle on the option to process all data locally. This way, you can enjoy some AI benefits while keeping your data private.

The Bottom Line

Samsung's Galaxy AI provides a range of features to make your smartphone experience easier and more enjoyable, from enhancing your photos and videos to providing real-time translation and writing assistance.

However, these features may only be free for a while. Samsung said that Galaxy AI will be available on Galaxy devices at no extra charge until the end of 2025, and the company has not said how much it will cost after that.

While it's possible Samsung may extend this period, now might be the best time to try Galaxy AI before a price is set.
